Children's Health Insurance Program in the United States

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a joint federal-state program administered by CMS that provides low-cost health coverage to children in families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private coverage. States operate CHIP within federal requirements, and in some states CHIP also covers pregnant women.

Administering agency: Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Children eligible for CHIP are in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low to afford private coverage.
